Erin Schrode, 18, the self proclaimed “ultimate green girl,” has long lead the charge for ecology and green living. Her efforts were recently rewarded, when she was awarded $36,000 to help pay her college tuition. The award was given by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, which selects five teenagers each year for the award.

Schrode helped found the Teens Turning Green coalition and has an eco-friendly line of body care products that are being sold in Whole Foods stores. She lobbied before the state Legislature in favor of laws promoting safe cosmetics.

She’s now attending New York University, and will use her $36,000 award to help pay her tuition.
