Disabled Student Wins 2-Year Fight to Live in Dorm
Disabled student, Micah Fialka-Feldman, has won the the right to live in the college dorm at Oakland University in Rochester after two years of fighting for the right. The 25-year-old, who has a cognitive impairment, is part of a special program for adults with disabilities, which allows them to participate in college activities. When he applied to live in the dorm, the university ruled that he was not eligible because he’s not in a degree seeking program. U.S. District Judge Patrick Duggan of Michigan’s Eastern District took Fialka-Feldman’s side, ruling that the university policy violated the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Fialka-Feldman said that he wanted to live with his friends and have, “the total college experience.”
