Is Your College Campus Safe?
When there’s a high profile act of violence on a college campus, it’s natural to take pause and wonder if your campus is safe.
This question is fresh in the mind of students, parents and faculty in the wake of the recent violent murder of Yeardley Love, 22, at the University of Virginia, allegedly committed by her ex-boyfriend and fellow student, George Huguely, 22.
With over 17 million students in colleges and universities, there were 220 murders and manslaughter cases reported in the year 2005 through 2008. This means there was about a 1 in 77,000 chance for a student to fall victim that time-frame. Of course some campuses are much safer than others.
The Department of Education gathers campus crime statistics, which can help people understand how safe their particular campus might be. You can look-up your campus
