Question by Magz? AMCNAS leader: Does you outgrow your high school “classification”?
Stoners, Preps, Losers, Jocks, goths, etc etc…

Someone called me “preppy” today, but I’ve already graduated college…

I thought “preppy” for guys meant “preparing for college” or “fitting of a fraternity”…

At what point do you stop being called preppy and start being called “successful”?
i realize i just re-worded the question improperly…

Does “one” outgrow “their” high school classification?

Well, I’m about to have my thirty year reunion.

At the ten year, all the old groups tended to hang together. By twenty, they were gone.

I am, however, still the insecure band nerd I was then. Without the band instrument.

    yes,I am past that

  6. chuck on August 15, 2010 at 6:12 PM

In the real world. High school and college are not the real world, sorry. In reality, nobody cares who you are or what you look like or what other idiots classified you as while you were being educated.

They are labeling your style of dress.

Most of us outgrow these nicknames when we’re in our early teens. Some people hold on to them because they had their best years in high school and are trying to retain some of that nostalgia.

When you stop writing sentences like “Does you outgrow your high school “clasification”. Go back to grammar school!

  9. Heather M on August 15, 2010 at 7:54 PM

being a “prep” means you dress in brand name clothes and stuff like that.
the only way to out grow this classification is to start acting successful. do your work, and let it be known that you do.

however, remember that it doesn’t really matter how others stereotype you. so long as you know who you are, its all that matters.

well, I’m currently a nerd in HS, but I don’t imagine thats going to change :)

  11. moddy almondy on August 15, 2010 at 9:43 PM

I was a loser in highschool- and happily still am one.
The difference is that I’m considered quirky, now.

  12. Sophia on August 15, 2010 at 10:04 PM

They’re probably just referring to your personal style now, not your social standing/clique.

I’m still a nerd/loser/dork/outsider/etc. who will never fit in, though…so I may not be the best person to ask. ; )

At least I’m not Goth anymore. : D

  13. IslandLady on August 15, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Yeah, I was a “holy roller.” You can say I outgrew that label.

  14. TangerineJello on August 15, 2010 at 11:16 PM

Of course. However, some seem to want to cling to their high school glory days, which is sad, lol. I hated high school — so many cliques, peer pressure, phony people — ack, I don’t even like thinking about it. yes, as you may have guessed, I wasnt’ a popular gal in school, lol.

  15. The Blonde Bird on August 15, 2010 at 11:58 PM

yeah…I thought when I got knocked up I would outgrow mine: “slut”

    ….didn’t happen.

Your command of the written language astounds me.

  18. quantumrift on August 16, 2010 at 1:35 AM

“Does you knows how to properly word a question?”

    Duh.

So what if you graduated college.

If you still dress or act like a preppie, or a stoner, or a goth, that’s what you’ll be associated with. If you don’t want to be stereotyped, then don’t wear the stereotype.

However, depending on your clothes, etc you can be called ‘preppie’ at any age or station in life.

  19. 8 Track Mind on August 16, 2010 at 2:13 AM

I was a greaser. who went to a prep school, got stoned alot, but played football for a losing team, lol. dangit, how could i have left off goth until i turned 92?

  20. Acid Zebra, ask an a-the-ist. on August 16, 2010 at 2:29 AM

I’m still a geek (never a nerd) – but these days, geeks are hot.

  21. phoebe41 on August 16, 2010 at 2:34 AM

I think you should take it as a complement. If someone thinks that you look “preppy” then they must also think that you look young.

  22. vinslave on August 16, 2010 at 2:37 AM

    I never really had one.

  23. solarius on August 16, 2010 at 3:00 AM

Probably not. I was called a “brainiac” and a “loner” in high school. I’m in college now. I still like reading books, and would much rather do that than go out nightclubbing or dealing with most group social activities. And I still prefer my own company.

  24. nikkibob03 on August 16, 2010 at 3:23 AM

Preppy doesn’t mean you dress in name brand clothing…it’s a style. You look well dressed and clean. Nothing wrong with being clean…
You’ll be called successful as soon as you get a job and do well for yourself in life. Do it for you though, not a label.

  25. mt75689 on August 16, 2010 at 3:49 AM

Believe it or not, the day will come when you dust off your high school yearbook, thumb through its pages, and not be able to remember the vast majority of people in it.

Somewhere along the way you’ve become your own man, made new friends, pursued a career, got married and had kids. The old classifications either no longer fit, or they simply won’t matter to to you—and they won’t matter to anyone else as well.

    So yes… you outgrow them.

  26. >Geisha< on August 16, 2010 at 4:36 AM

    (((magley)))

I think the SECOND you leave highschool you no longer fit into that silly clique.

  27. Murazor on August 16, 2010 at 5:35 AM

No, I’m still pretty much a stoner even though I also run a very successful business and travel the world regularly.

  28. Terrie on August 16, 2010 at 6:12 AM

I dont think you outgrow it, you can expand on it, look at it in a different way or use it in a positive way, but its always there

  29. TLM *facepalm* on August 16, 2010 at 6:40 AM

Once a stoner geek, always a stoner geek.

  30. dartagnon p on August 16, 2010 at 7:21 AM

As an alumnae of Bellarmine College Preparatory I can officially say that the term preppy comes from people who have attended Prep schools, i.e., “preparatory” schools.

I think I shrugged the Preppy title when I opened my motorcycle shop just after graduating college, mostly to show my parents that all that education served NO constructive purpose, but hey, it was the early 70′s and rebelllion was in the air and we were still having sit-ins trying to get the govt out of Vietnam. (Why is it that the college kids always have to get the Republicans out of a war somewhere? Are Republicans just born war-mongers?).

And don’t worry … as soon as you can spell “successful” properly YOU WILL BE!

Another clue on the preppy thing … I will NEVER go without carrying a pen since you never know when you will need to write down the number of some hottie but I’m told that is ONE way to tell a preppy. Also, if you have a “pull-tab” on the back of your shirt that is another sign. And any time you wear a neat pair of slacks and a shirt with a pocket you may fall into that category as well. Grab and old football workout jersey and a pair of levi’s and you’ll be accepted everywhere!
    :-)
Peace … Preppies of the World Unite …

  31. madnoelle on August 16, 2010 at 8:00 AM

I would think after colege…but there are a lot of people to deal with in the ‘real world’ who apparently don’t ‘get it’

  32. Nurse Susan on August 16, 2010 at 8:58 AM

    Definitely!
And by the way – nerds make the best husbands!
[ they are smart enough to change what they can, and make enough money to pay for any other changes! ]
    Stoners either straighten up or drop out;
    preps know how to dress – but what else about life?;
    jocks get older, slower, and frequently fat;
    goths get makeovers, etc.
    Successful =
    great job, great salary
    no debts except possible mortgage
    lovely home
fantastic spouse [ if you want one ]
healthy, happy, safe, and smart kids
